Love - sometimes elusive, sometimes painful. At some point in our life, we may experience love and with that feeling might come heartbreak.
After the success of our Holiday Sweaters & Egg Nog compilation, Cactus-Mouth and I decided to team up again for two of music’s great subject matters: love & heartbreak. We asked artists to give us their interpretation of either a love or heartbreak song - exclusively for us. While some may tug at your heart strings, they are never too saccharine or sappy, nor are they too dismal or bleak. This is a MONSTER mix - 20 different artists - 71 minutes of heart-stopping goodness.
We were super lucky to get such wonderful contributions from these artists. This time around we had some amazing covers - from the stupendously catchy “Not Feeling The Love (Trapped In The Black Lodge)” R. Kelly cover by Kuhrye-oo, the Wintercoats’ sublime “Someone To Share My Life With” Jens Lekman cover, Naminé’s echo-y, heartbreaking New Order “Bizarre Love Triangle” cover, and the swirling, swoon worthy “The Way You Look Tonight” Frank Sinatra cover by Saskatchewan. They do the originals justice and even surpass them, if I say so myself.
I feel so grateful to have newer artists on board like: Moths (he released a video for our track yesterday), Under Alien Skies, clownfacee, Youth Castles, and Pressed And, as well as some of my dream comp artists like Jeans Wilder, Local Winds & Top Girls, Fielded, and Welcome Back Sailors. We also pulled in the likes of such talented folks as Medic Hands, Sutja Gutiérrez, Kiss Kiss Fantastic, and Ra Calium. A big special shout out to my eternal homeboy, the ever wonderful, ever helpful: Guerre. No exclusive comp of mine (collaboration or not) will ever be complete without some input from him!
Before I close, I must add that one of the most giggle inducing (in a completely good way) tracks on the comp is Butterclock’s “breakUPparadize”. Drawing from “Gangster Paradise”, it will leave you both slightly heartbroken yet smiling. ALSO, a radically different, super lo-fi mono track from Ricky Eat Acid entitled “Seventeen”.
I want to thank each and every artist on the mix, my good buddy Cactus Mouth, and, most of all, you for listening. FEEL THE LOVE! ♥

Preview :: Local Winds - “Small Towns” | Upcoming Record: In The World of Ours
Here’s a nice little electronic meditation of an EP coming from Scott Dickson (of Closed Cassette) under his new moniker Local Winds. The upcoming EP, In The World of Ours is filled with electronic - electricity, and soft calming synths that indulge you into a world of charm and chilled vibes. Above is one of the eight tracks off the album to whet your appetite. The record is out Feb. 22nd on tape, mini cd and digitally. Cover art photo by Haley Luna.

Co-Premiere With Nofop: Local Winds “Small Towns” From In The World Of Ours(2010)
I tend to be anti premiere / co-premiere.
This is because I think it cheapens the blog to be swayed in what you post based on the exposure it gives you, as opposed to how good it is.
So, that being said, I agreed to do it here because:
A: The songs good
B: It allowed me to open with a rant about premiere’s and co-premiere’s.
But, you won’t see a lot of them here and you’ll never get one I agree to post without hearing it first.
That precursor out of the way, Scott Dickson of Local Winds and Closed Cassette was a pleasure to work with on Collaborations and delivered one of my favorite jams off that tape in “For Now”, his collaboration with Top Girls. With his new project, Local Winds, he’s taping further into the spacious electro soundscapes he works so well with.
I’ve always liked Scott’s seeming tendencies towards organic inspiration in his pieces. And in “Small Towns”, the first track released off his upcoming In The World Of Ours, this is absolutely present. The slow grow of urban sprawl displacing plant life and animals in it’s parasitic advance, only to house middle class mundania at it’s finest.
Or maybe that’s just my interpretation. But one of the best things about Scott’s tracks is there’s enough space for anyone to breathe whatever world they’d like into it.
We are all starting to feel a little more jolly as the season approaches so, in light of that, and as a reprieve from list-making, we asked two of our staff to curate a Christmas-themed cassette for the season.
Side A is provided by Simon Roche and features the track from the now-ubiquitous…
“Things Must Get Done” is also sitting on a mixtape brought to you by State Magazine!
